Hi Kim,
I'm using my old Centris 650 for exactly this purpose and it works great.
No drop in performance and since the ethernet port on the 650 is 10 Mbps the
limiting factor will still be your cable modem (DSL in my case).
Sustainable Softworks even has a version of IPNetRouter just for 68K Macs
that is less expensive, $49 IIRC. If you've used the 650 on the net with
the cable modem don't judge it's performance as a router by it's web
browsing speed. Running as a router it won't have to interpret and render
web pages, etc, it'll just be passing packets back and forth and is more
than fast enough for this. Mine has been up and running for months without
a problem or even a reboot and lets me share my DSL with 3 or 4 desktops and
an occasional laptop.
