Dunno about the NeXT fuser... Don't know whose print engine they used.
Your Apple uses a Canon engine. If they're physically identical, you
might give it a try. Toner cartridge is a clue that they *might* be the
same.
Whir for a couple seconds is what it's supposed to do.
