High level format only erases the directory structure of the hard disk,
essentially making your Mac think the hard drive is empty. (All the data
is stillactually on it, you Mac just can't see it and will write right
over it)
A low level format will pysically write a zero sector to the data on your
drive, in effect returing it to the state it was in when the drive was
brand new withNO data on it. Data ANNOT be recovered after performing a
low-level format.
A 1.8GB drive takes approx. 1.5 hrs to low-level and zero all data on a
Performa6400/180, so I'd say about 2 hours for the format on a 2gb drive.
(This is all dependent on the drive speed, mine was a 7200 RPM IDE).
