I think that technically low-level format is not some thing you want to do.
To be really anal you cant do a LLF. I dont think many software programs
even give you an interleave option anymore.
So next were on to a "LLF" which usually is just a resetting of the drive to
a "zero" state. For example all your info goes as close to the original
state from the factory. (kind of like you can never step in the same river
twice...type "original condition". The low level is basically defining the
tracts and sectors (and setting every thing back to 0000000)
A high level format basically writes the system structures to the
disk,,,sticks OS dependant files at the "beginning" of the disk.
Why do you want to do a low level format>? If its necessary its necessary,
but I would avoid it at all costs. The last one I did required me to send
the drive back to Maxtor, but I had to attempt it because my MDB was
shot...not fun on a huge drive.
There was a cool article in SciAm about optical and all sorts of crazy new
drives....</tangent>
As for how long it will take....it wont take as long as restoring all your
info (unless you backup all the time).
Here is a really good article
