Dear List:

A few days ago I purchased a 4GB Barracuda internal hard drive for a
friend's PowerMac 8500. The hard drive proved to be defective because it
refused to mount after repeated attempts to do so. I took the drive back to
the store and exchanged it for another drive.
I installed this drive and initialised it using Drive Setup. The drive
initialised perfectly.

I installed a fresh operating system and then the necessary software.
Everything seemed to be fine. Then, a couple of days later, I went back to
my friend's place to do some other things to his computer. When I tried to
wake it from SLEEP, it refused to do so. Finally, when I did get it up and
running, I was greeted with a flashing question mark on the screen,
indicating that the computer could not locate a proper disk from which to
boot. So, I booted the computer with a boot CD, but the hard drive was no
where to be seen on the desktop.

I brought the computer back to my place, opened it up, and checked the
connections to the hard drive. I restarted the computer without incident.
But I was suspicious, and so I put the computer through a series of SHUTDOWN
and SLEEP runs. On one occasion after waking from SLEEP, I got an unusual
message stating that, "some files may have been lost". Eventually, on one of
these runs, the flashing question mark returned.

Now, I'm left to wonder. Is there something wrong with the hard drives
themselves? Or, is it an indication of other things running amuck inside my
friend's 8500?

Roland :)
