greetings list,
about a month ago i added 2 128mb dimms to double my ram. my understanding
was to put these in the A1 and B1 slots, moving smaller dimms down finally
removing 2 16mb dimms to make room. since that time i have had a booting
issue. almost always, on the first attempt to start up, the startup chime
will sound and the hd spins up but the screen stays black. after 5-10
seconds, the disk spins down and the machine sits there. < key+ return
does nothing nor does the 3 finger salute. only way to shut if off is the
button on the front which gives a flash across the screen. pushing the
start key again usually boots the computer fine without the "this computer
may not have been shut down properly..." message. the boot up issue is
annoying. what is a real pisser is that given enough time running the
machine WILL freeze. at first i thought it was just when it went into
sleep mode it was unable to come around again but a few times recently it
has frozen up while i was working at it (ok, i was web surfing or looking
at email).
system is a 9600/233 w/ powerlogix 333 G3 running at 350mhz. there are hds
in all three available bays as well as stock cd rom and floppy drive. 512
mb of ram counting the new dimms. running os8.1. any ideas? i'm going to
take the new ram out and see if the problem goes away but that is just for
experimental purposes- i don't accept that as a solution. i appreciate any
suggestions. thanks, charlie
