I was obviously misunderstood, or the original question wasn't understood.
The original message wanted to know if an upgrade ZIF carrier (OEM Apple for the B/W)
would work in his 7600. No it will not and as I said the ZIF CPU would work, but only
if used in a ZIF carrier designed for his Mac. (The same XLR8 model that I have
running in one of my 8600s as an example.) I did not say that the ZIF CPU daughter
card couldn't be used. (I have an OEM Apple ZIF in my XLR8 carrier) I said the carrier
couldn't be used.
The other question was about the older Macs being OS X ready. To me (and as was
covered in numerous previous posts to this and several other Mac tech lists) this
means can I slap an OS X CD in the drive and boot up and install a working OS X. The
answer is no. It can be made to happen, but requires a little playing to fool the disk
into doing the installation. (Thus the request I made to the list for the URL at
Other World Computing's site that explains how to "trick" OS X into installing in an
older mac.) Apple itself says that the pre G3 Macs are not OS X ready (even if
upgraded to G3/G4) and that they are not supported. It is after market hacking that
has
allowed it to be done at all.
Next time, please read the questions and then read the answers as they pertain to the
original questions. Being human, I make mistakes, but in this case, my answers were
geared to keep someone from buying a ZIF carrier that wouldn't work and could cause
damage to itself and or the 7600 MB if installed. Now if you have been able to
install OS X by clicking the installer button on the CD into a pre G3, please advise
the list as to how to do it. The rest of us have had to use the hacked technique to do
our installations.
