I haven't heard it called a long format before but, a short or "quick" format
just erases the file allocation table/directory on the disk. Then the disk thinks
it has the entire formatted area to write to, although the data is still where it
always was.

A llong or "low-level" format completely erases all data and re-writes the tracks
and sectors on the media.

However, I don't see how doing any of that wiil work because the machine can't
see the disk. Inserting the disk should inspire some kind of response, i.e.;
"This disk is unrecognizeable, do you wish to format....." According to your
post; your machine can't even see the drive/disk.

Try throwing out the Iomega preferences file and reinsert the disk. If that
doesn't do it, restart the machine and try it. If that doesn't do it, have
Sherlock find all occurances of Iomega anything and throw it away.

Go to Iomega's website and download the latest software for the Mac. Install the
software and you will probably be instructed to restart the machine.

Let me know if any of the above cures your ails.
