I just bought a 400MHz MACh Carrier G4 MPe for my 7300, excellent purchase,
but anyway...
XLR8 processor upgrades for pre-G3 machines (7x00, 9x00, 8x00 series
machines anyway) come in two parts.
First, the MACh Speed G4 ZIF package/module consists of the CPU (in this
case a G4) and heat sink attached to a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) adapter.
ZIF packages/modules are standard in Beige G3s and newer Macs.
Next, the MACh Carrier is the processor card , without a CPU. Soldered on it
is a ZIF slot in which you plug a ZIF package/module.
Finally, MPe stands for Multiprocessing enabled, and the entire upgrade,
processor card and G4 CPU ZIF package/module are called the MACh Carrier G4
MPe. When you buy both together everything is assembled for you and you just
have to replace your current processor card with the new one. Of course you
have to install the software for the card first.
Hope that helps,
John
