My 9600 is a pre G3 machine running a 4-port USB card.  The fact that it has
a G3 upgrade is somewhat irrelevant to the discussion.  If I pulled the 400
MHz G3 processor daughtercard and reinstalled the stock 200 MHz 604e
daughtercard, it would all still work (as I have been forced to do just that
while troubleshooting memory problems in the past).  The key is the USB
drivers and a quality card.

The Beige G3 is the first, true G3 that Apple put out.  Hope this helps.
