Some USB hubs are better than others. I did some research on that when
my hub kept causing problems on my iMac. My computer kept coming up
with errors, bombs and the Finder quitting. I removed the USB hub and
all the problems disappeared.
My printer problems disappeared as well. My scanner was hanging too.
Its problems disappeared.
I found two good hubs, Keyspan and MacAlly through the macfixit forums.
So the hub could be your problem.
