Any of the Yamaha external CD-RW are great, I am using a 6416 on my 6400, I just
picked up a 8424 refurbished off eBay for $140, I will just need to get a SCSI 3
cable to connect it to the back (built in SCSI) on my friends beige G3. Should
work better than mine. You can still find 6416's refurbished for less than
this.....

With an external CD-RW you don't have to have the drive powered up all the time,
it has it's own fan for removing the extra heat generated during burning, you
still have the internal drive to burn cd copies and boot from, though my
external will boot with shift-option-delete-apple keys depressed.

I do not know about SCSI conflicts with a SCSI scanner, maybe you could boot
with the one you want to use turned on it might avoid conflicts.
