i ran my xlr8 carrier zif at 59, and it worked great. then, without warning,
it fried!
i called xlr8 and they sent me a replacement. they messed this up though,
and i had to wait over 5 days for them to sort out their shipping problems,
but whenever anyone says "overnight, guaranteed! you'll have it tomorrow!" i
replace that with "4 days, minimum". so actually, they ended up sending me
two, one of which did not fit properly. this makes me wonder about quality
control on the floor ("yeah, sure it fits. pack it up!")
i run it at 56.9 mhz, and it works great. but i am very apprehensive. it
seems to me that one ought to question the trade-off in apparent greater
processing power versus the increased bile level in one's stomach. it
becomes an obsessive activity: can i squeeze another mhz out of this bus???
ah, damn it fried! my advice, be aware of your overclocking hubris. learn to
be satisfied, if not happy, with your measely 5x mhz.

The bus speed on any PCI PowerMac is good to 50MHz, maybe higher. Basically,
you want to run the highest bus speed your machine will run at without
crashing. There's no real way to tell, except trial and error. For example,
my PowerMac 9500 with its sodered-on motherboard cache will run at a 59.5MHz
bus x 8 = 476MHz on an XLR8 CarrierZIF with an IBM G3 400 1MB.
