Sorry about the last blank... believe it or not I'm typing this on a Dell!!! If I can get a good sonnet card / the Sonnet Tango, for instance, I'll be able to use my recently installed ADSL line on my 6500.
As Alan Miller noted, it greatly speeds up the machine, from desktop functions (my 6500 was never really that great a performer using the 8.0-8.5 then 8.6 Mac Os's... alway slow with a pause before opening and closing windows. The problem is that I have been unable to find anything at the 6400 site to tell me about compatibility with the factory installed ATI rage card. At this point, I have been unable to load and play Carmegeddon. At times the L2/G3 card cannot recognize the extra 32Mo I have installed, so it tells me that I'm running on only 64Mo... which, after system bootup and game bootup, I am sometimes down to around only 32Mo or so. Also, When I tried to run Dracula unleased before installing open GL, the thing only ran choppily, and after installing open GL it wouldn't even boot. Sonnet couldn't help me except to tell me that Carmageddon had some bugs in it and was an old game anyway.... whew. Well, they tried. So now, in order to be able to run avid cinema and output to video casette, I may have to yank the card. That's my experience so far with the L2/G4 1Mo 400MHz card in a creation studio 6500 275 96Mo machine. Most stuff works great, but look for complications when running video. chuck from France ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan Miller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PCI PowerMacs" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2001 2:35 PM Subject: Re: IDE controller card in 6500 > LaVar Huntzinger wrote: > > > I am wondering about getting a Sonnet G3/L2 accelerator. It is a very noticeable difference. I would suggest getting the G3 with 1 MB backside cache as it really helps. I just couldn't afford the 400 MHz card when I got mine 2 years ago. > > -- > Alan Miller > Underwater Photographer http://home.earthlink.net/~uwphoto/ > 6400/200 w/ Sonnet G3/300/1 eBay ID uwphotoer > > We won.
