Hi Chris, I got several answers to my question when I first posted it. Then the thread evolved into other subjects using the old tag line--some of them being useful to me, but on other unrelated subjects.
I will be researching this further. My internal SCSI bus and/or harness harness is eating my devices. A CD-Burner on the external went belly up--but that was a servo error. Since the narrow SCSI on my 6500 isn't that fast anyway, and Fry's Electronics sell EIDE goodies cheap, I thought that this would be the way to go. Unfortunately, I must give up one of the pci slots on this anal-retentive design of a motherboard. I could use the comm slot if I were guaranteed it would work. An internal modem wouldn't not work in it and wouldn't allow an external one to work without taking it completely out. The plaintalk sound input doesn't work either, as far as that is concerned. I must use the mobo sound input from the CDr output to get any sound into the thing. And even this is not necessarily a good work-around since Speakable Items requires use of the PlainTalk port through the Sound Control Panel. Transparent Language works okay. Since the 6500 seems to be a machine which is a study in what Apple Computer could possibly do wrong in designing a computer, I am going to check Ebay for either a 9500 X G3, or a good deal on a B&W. Give me PCI SLOTS. For now, I've simply got to nurse this poor old betsy along. And I need to burn CD's. Regards and Good Luck, Tim Sullivan P.S: I had similar modem problems with a 6400. >>Subject: IDE controller card? >> >>Tim, >>Did you get an answer from the list about IDE controller card? >> >>I'm wondering if I can use and IDE drive in my 8500 P/mac, by getting >>a PCI card that will go to IDE?
