How old is the Sportster? Is it v.90? If not, can it be flashed to v.90? Recall that there were two competing 56K standards that were merged to become v.90. BOTH of the original standards were better in their native forms than the resulting compromise and many modems will try to connect as native before attempting v.90. Global Village used one (Kflex) and USR used the other (X2). My backup ISP was X2. With my X2 Cardinal modem, I connect at 52 to 53K, which is as fast as theoretically possible. My mother's iMac, which is Kflex, typically connects in the mid 40s. See <http://www.56k.com>.
