At USR, you should find a flash upgrade to V.90. Do this first. Are both modems logging on at the same speed? If this differs, so should the overall performance. If you're feeling adventurous, you might want to check out the USR manual. There's a lot of info. there that should help build alternative init strings. Although I haven't found time yet, I can see several things to try. You can also modify your CCL. There's an Apple (unsupported) "Modem Script Generator", which creates a basic script for you to modify. You should also read the "ARA Modem Scripting Guide.pdf".
