There is no global answer. Sometimes yes and sometimes no. My 20th 
Anniversary Mac (TAM) can use MacOS 8.5-9.0 generic and 9.1 Digital 
Audio G4 installers, but the TAM required a special installer CD for 
MacOS 8.0. My 9500 can use a MacOS 9.1 G4 Digital Audio install CD, 
but not a PowerBook FireWire 9.0.3 install CD.

Don't be afraid to experiment. You won't lose anything but time.
