>Not everyone is concerned with measuring their system bus speed or >knowing the precise affects of optimization on disk test times (yet)! One thing I did learn is that one should always install your OS on the same type computer you're using it on. The hardware is polled at install, and software is skipped or chosen based on the machine running the initial installer. When I've coped system folders from one machine type to a different type of machine, the system usually boots OK, but performance is sluggish. For example, a system folder might be copied between a 9500/100MHz-601 and a 9500/233MHz-604e equipped with identical PCI cards, but system folders are not exchangeable between a Beige G3 and a 20th Anniversary Mac. My 8.6 iMac install CD boots most of my machines, but experience taught me never to copy the CD's system folder, but instead install 8.6 fresh onto 9500s, a 7500, and TAM. Surprisingly, the iMac CD installer recognizes the TAM TV tuner and installs proper software for it. Note that many recent Apple installer CD system folders won't even boot its intended CPU when copied to a HD. Apple is not content just disabling my PowerBook CD from booting other macs; Apple designed the CD such that it won't let my PowerBook boot from the installer CD system folder on a HD. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
