Do you have a lot of non-Apple extensions installed? At what point does the problem happen? What's on the screen? Can you still move the mouse across the screen, or does it freeze up too? Try booting to the OS 8.6 All extension set in the extensions manager. Does the same thing happen? Try trashing anything in the Startup Items folder. Any difference?
