I had a 7200/75 running IE4.5 for some time, and I did experience some instability - mainly when the machine went to sleep with an open IE window (this was all over a LAN connection, BTW). None of the random crashes like you describe. I found, to an extent, that unchecking the "Load only when needed" box in the TCP/IP control panel helped. I don't know if you've already done this, but if you haven't it might be worth a go.
