William, It is a shortcoming of OS 8.6 that was addressed in the OS 9.0 revamp. From the beginning, the Mac OS had a 'file open' limit of something like 200 individual files (the actual number escapes me). This was more than enough in the good old days, but with the explosion of control panels and extensions (not to mention fonts), this amount can be reached quite easily today. This is what originally forced me to migrate to OS 9 (which raised the open file limit much higher).
