Hi Wm Voelker,

Just as Chris Lawson (the Pickle) says that with too high an OS for a smaller
processor and limited RAM, the OS can become the "bottleneck" slowing
things down, this is like the reverse where with all that processor capability
and RAM perhaps you should simply upgrade
to say, 9.2 via an Easy Install"?

Here's an excerpt from the tail end of P's article:

"Any of the 604-based Macs (the 7300, 7600, 8500, 9500, etc.) are good
candidates for OS 9.1, but the lowest-end 604s, like the 8500/132 and
the 7600/132, are probably on the low end of what will feel fast enough.
If you have a G3 or G4 upgrade card in the box, go ahead and put
9.1 on there -- it's a great improvement over 9.0.4, and over 8.6 as well."

"If you've got a G3, run 9.1 unless you are absolutely too strapped for
cash to get it. If you're one of the original iMac owners or beige G3/233
owners and still running 8.1, I implore you: upgrade. You'll appreciate it.
Get 8.6 at the minimum, but 9.1 will be best."
