Mac OS versions 8.6 and earlier can open a maximum of 348 files. Upgrading to Mac OS 9 permits you to open 8,169 files.
Turning off Virtual Memory (all things being equal) will reduce the number of open files. Alsoft, Inc. has a free CSM "Open Files Count" that keeps track of number of files open.
