Mac OS versions 8.6 and earlier can open a maximum of 348 files. Upgrading
to Mac OS 9 permits you to open 8,169 files.

Turning off Virtual Memory (all things being equal) will reduce the number of
open files.

Alsoft, Inc. has a free CSM "Open Files Count" that keeps track of number of
files open. A search of version tracker should give you the download link.

<< Greetings,

The system: 7300/PowerLogix G3400, 320mb. System 8.6.

The problem: if I have more than 5-6 applications running at once, or if I
have been running the system for some time (2 days, if it stays up that
long), I get the error message "Too many files open" or something to that
effect. When I tried Netscape 6.x or Mozilla, this happened much more
quickly than with any other programs I would run.

The question: are there any solutions for this? It may be the case that it
is unavoidable, but if there are any extension issues that are known I would
love to hear of them (I'm running the base set+a few my apps have installed
and one or two extras, such as a program switcher, for the most part).

Thank you very much!
