Parity requires one extra bit per 8-bit byte, thereby becoming a "by 9" or "by 36", instead of the conventional "by 8" or "by 32", etcetera. ECC requires some more extra bits per four bytes. My former employer developed an enhanced version of ECC which took advantage of the existing parity bits, and included only those extra bits which were necessary to effect full ECC. In this technique, which was widely adopted by our competitors, only five extra bits were required. This was EDC ... error detection and correction ... and was capable of detecting and correcting ANY single bit error, and was capable of detecting ANY double bit error, but it was not capable of correcting double bit errors. Some less advcanced systems could not detect ALL possible double bit errors. Later, this technique was extended to incorporate ANY multiple bit detection and ANY double bit correction. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
