>The PC card consumes lots of power.
Yeh, it's a whole PC motherboard in disguise and it's also a Pentium 166MHz which run quite hot (I cougt my hand on it while fitting a PCI card and it was very hot, just after power-down. >I have one in my G3/300 MT. I added supplementary fans cooling in the MT's >"handle" ... two small fans which happen to blow over the accessory cards, >including the PC card. I was thinking of adding an auxiliary fan to cool the 604e but there is no way to cool the PCI cards really, I could use a PCI slot cooling system but it would not reach back the full 12" to cool the CPU. >Crashes attributable to the PC card have vanished. Would it help if I moved the PC Card away from the 604e? It's currently back-on to it in slot 1 (the manual specifically asks you to put it there. >On a 7300, you only have a 45 cubic foot per minute fan. The G3 DT's fan is >the same. Oh, that's not very big.... >As an experiment, I replaced my G3 DT's fan with a fan rated 65 cubic feet >per minute. > >The results were a reduction in G3 chip temperature from 97 degrees F to 85 >degrees F. I presume there was a corresponding reduction in other component >temperatures. I dunno what the CPU temperature of my 604e is, does GuagePro or anything like that return a temperature for stock CPU Cards? >I presume you're running pcSetup2, version 2.1.7f? Yes. It may make sense that heat is causing the Mac side to hang, maybe just the excess of stretching the CPU running 9.1, having the PC card in there and having only the stock fan. The one thing I will say is that the hard disk is a Seagate U-5 and, while they have a bad reputation for getting hot, it's never very hot when I open the machine. -- -- Mark Benson SilValleyPirate - AIM silicon_valley_pirate_uk - Yahoo!
