What brand/make 604e card is it?  If it is a Umax (the kind I use), 
you have to make sure the first three sets of pins on the 
dual-processor connector on the top edge of the card are jumpered, 
otherwise it will not work.  Other brands have similar quirks.

The cache is also sometimes problematic with upgrade cards (it was 
with mine).  Pull the cache, look for sticks that are Apple-branded 
and made for your machine.  Nevertheless, the cache was not nearly as 
problematic for the 8500 as it was for the 7500.

You might also have to de-interleave the RAM as a last resort.  If it 
still is not stable after all that, then you probably have a 
defective card.
