Since we are talking about home movies here, which tend to be 
less-than-Spielberg quality anyway (no offense intended to the 
original poster), why not go a much cheaper route and make VideoCDs. 
VideoCDs play in most, if not all, modern DVD players, as well as 
regular computer CD-ROMs.  You would just need a super fast SCSI 
setup for the capture, capure/editing software by Strata or Avid or 
even iMovie, software to encode the DV or QT streams into MPEG-1, and 
a regular CD burner with Toast (which I hear makes VCDs very nicely).

This is something I'm looking to do with lots of my old films and 
tapes, but can someone recommend a good MPEG-1 encoder?  I keep 
reading on various web sites that QuickTime Pro encodes MPEG-1 but I 
don't think that's accurate.
