I would just add to this conversation that you don't get decent video
any bigger than 320x240 out of the 8500's built in digitizer, which
is good enough for a TV screen (though hardware compression and
640x480 gives better quality, if it's coming from VHS you'll never
notice the difference).
The 8500's built in digitizer has hardware interpolation to show that
320x240 movie at full screen on the video output with high quality.
If you're doing video editing without hardware compression, you've
basically got to go with 320x240 and no compression (though with that
G4 in the 8500 they might be able to get away with some light
compression realtime without affecting the framerate...), but you do
not need superfast SCSI for this setup (320x240xno compression)
Also, toast will take a movie in any format that quicktime supports
and convert it to MPEG before burning it to the VCD, IIRC.
In light of this, I'd say to go with a CD burner, a big IDE drive and
a SCSIDE bridge ('cuz the IDE PCI card would slow the computer down
during capture), and Toast, plus Avid Videoshop, 'cuz it is easy to
use and free.
