Does the "8" port hub have 9 ports or 9 connectors.  There are two 
ways to handle using one port for either normal connections or 
uplinks.  The first is a switch, usually placed near the connector 
and indentified somehow.  The second is a second connector for the 
uplink port with the required swapping of pairs.  You can use either 
the uplink port or the normal port but not both.  Check your link 
lights, that will tell you how many ports you have.
