The terrible hissing getting louder is probably the ALC (Auto Level 
Control) which adjusts the recording volume automatically. I'd 
suggest you turn it off. You'll have to adjust the volume manually 
once for each album or cassette you record but you will also make 
recordings more faithful to the originals. ALC will try to bring up 
the volume in soft passages and decrease it in loud ones and can 
result in a characteristic "pumping" sound.

Herb's suggestions are good also because if you're burning directly 
from cassette to CD you're probably getting "one long song" which 
won't be addressable, ie. you won't be able to skip to a particular 
song.
