Thank you Mark....this seems to have solved the problem....so far! The funny thing is I had just unplugged the printer ( I had forgotten that I had just plugged in a printer to test it out!!!)
If this is truly a hardware bug, it is a strange one. Once, while trying to figure this out, I was working on my iMac (right beside the 8600)....no one was on the 8600....suddenly the Finder quit all by itself without anyone touching it. It was developing all kinds of weird problems. But so far, unplugging the printer seems to be the solution. Fortunately, for me this isn't a problem, because I have a small network in my home and can simply use the other printer.. This raises an interesting question though....how the heck do you connect a printer to an 8600? Is there some kind of fix? Do other 8600 owners have this problem? Mark, what kind of printing set up do you use? Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions and help. I probably have the cleanest machine in town now, with zapped pram, rebuilt desktop, new system folder, optimized disk, tech tool and norton certified Okay...whew!
