Serial, or USB, if you've added a card (combo USB/FireWire), as I did.

Yes, turn the printer off 1st, or go USB.

Serial to an Epson Color 740. I could go USB, as it has parallel, USB, and
Mac serial interfaces. I just got in the habit of shutting it off 1st.
