I am using an 32-12-40 CD-RW drive using Firewire with a PCI card on
my PM 9600 (w Newer 500 Mhz G3). I think the requirement for
'built-in' firewire is simply Sony's way to avoid having to support
issues with PCI Firewire cards. I went through a couple of days of
issues with my drive only to find that it was the original PCI card I
was using. Simply changing to a Mac supported Firewire card solved
all my problems. My original card was a USB/FW combo from CompUSA
that worked fine to burn disks, but the Toast verify would hang the
card every time. Switching to separate USB and FW PCI cards
instantly resolved the issue.

To be short, there should be no difference between a FW PCI card and
built-in FW from a software point of view.
