Most digital cameras utilize Compact Flash cards -- some use Smart Cards, Sony cameras use memory sticks (or some such) -- so to get the best transfer rate, get a Compact Flash (Smart Card, whatever) reader. Plug the reader into your USB port, stick the card into the reader, and, voila, it mounts on the desktop like another drive.
