If you have rebuilt the desktop and trashed your finder prefs then this sounds
likje a bad install of the system.

Your friend is paranoid. There is very little difference between 9.1 and 9.2.x.
People think that the RAM requirements are more hefty, but that is not true. I
would go with 9.2.1 since 9.2.2 is just a finder integration bump for OS X above
9.2.1. I have NEVER had any problems with 9.2 over 9.1, and I have installed it
on hundreds of machines.
