YOu sound like an "ex" global village user.  With US Robotics you don't need
any software. Just go to your modem control panel and set it to US Robotics
High Speed and you're done.  That's one of the reason that I hated GLobal
Village.  They required a bunch of extra software (at a hefty price) and made
so so modems.
