It has been suggested to you that you pull the motherboard cache from
the board when installing your G3 processor card (provided you found
one that will work with your 7200, Joe says Sonnet makes one). I have
a Powerlogix G3/350 that came with a software control panel that I
loaded allowing me to just disable the motherboard cache without
physically removing it. Improper or careless removal of the cache
could damage your board. Check the website of the manufacturer of the
G3, you may be able to download the card control software as well as
instructions and switch settings information. Switch settings were
VERY important to be correct on my G3 card because there was one
switch that could have damaged the card if it was in the wrong
position. Also, I had to play with the various settings to find the
set which allowed my 8500 to run the fastest and still be stable. Bus
errors and machine freezes may occur if you try to overclock the card
or run the card at a bus speed much faster than the motherboard's
original designed bus speed.

For example, my 8500 board has a bus speed rating of 40 MHz and I
set my G3 350 at 45 MHz and a bus ratio setting to give me the
highest clock speed (337 MHz) at that bus setting. It ran fine once
it was booted but about one out of every three start ups a bus error
would cause the machine to hang during boot-up. And the
manufacturers recommended setting of 50 MHz bus/350 MHz clock was
very unstable on my computer. I settled with a 42.5 MHz bus speed at
320 MHz. Runs well.

Anyone having better luck at pushing their 8500 board (originally
a120 MHz 604) running OS 8.6 any faster with their processor upgrade?
I have also not been able to set the backside cache at 2:1 or 1/2 the
processor speed as recommended without an instant freeze/reboot. 5:2
for backside is the best it will muster.
