But I can't help one last humorous note. Many have
commented on the death of English by pointing out the
pronunciation of the hip hop culture as manifested by
"yo, yo, don't ax me, homey." In Chaucer's time "ask"
was, in fact, pronounced "ax." Whether it carried over
to Elizabethan times is beyond my knowledge but it
certainly changes the ring of this snippet from "Lear":
"When thou dost ask me blessing, I'll kneel down,
And ask of thee, forgiveness, so we'll live
And pray and sing and tell old tales and laugh."
