Sounds like it could be a SCSI issue. Check to be sure only one (and only one) device on your internal (and external) SCSI chain is terminated. Also check for a SCSI ID conflict. I have found that ensuring that each ID is uniquely set across both buses has helped me in the past though it shouldn't make a difference.
