Nuke and pave means erasing the original HD - or at least deleting 
the system folder - and then fresh-installing the OS from CD, as 
opposed to installing the new OS over an existing one.

OTOH if you are getting the errors you described when actually 
*running* the Mac from the CD then something really screwy is going 
on.  Is it an original CD or an /ahem/ backup?

Zapping the PRAM a few times can't hurt - I usually do it 15 times on 
a single boot ie hold the buttons down till you have heard 15 chimes 
- and running Norton Disc Doctor or similar to check for corruption 
of your applications is probably a good idea too.
