You should compare also with other system an important characteristic : latency. On an hardware point of view, the pc sound card have appx (for a soundblaster) 700 milliseconds of latency (was in 2000) where the mac hardware sound system have a 70 ms of latency (confirmed by a mac musician) On the other hand you should be interested in the Operating System Latency, wich i have learn this year in the multimedia course of my diploma. Linux : 100 ms Linux with low-latency patch : 3 ms Windows : 30 ms Mac Os Classic : 10 ms Mac OS X : 3 ms
