Possibly nonsense unless the problem is specific to Newer Tech cards.

I have several Macs here with Sonnet upgrade cards (800 Mhz G4 PCI and 400
Mhz G3 L2) and plenty of 5-volt FPM DIMMs from various manufacturers.
Interleaved and otherwise, absolutely no problems with the G3/G4 processors,
but the way the Newer Tech software implements cache access may be a
problem.

I have heard that some DIMMs are incompatible but nobody seems to have had a
problem with Sonnet upgrade cards.
