The 1710AV monitor makes it so the startup chime does not occur. This is normal (though it seems Apple shoulda fixed that.) IIRC, the 1710AV Owners Manual tells about the lack of startup sound. The owners manual is download-able at www.apple.com and also at other places on the web.
