I'd say that, if you don't need more than 3 PCI slots (and remember that the 7600 has decent built-in video if you fill up the VRAM slots) and a couple of internal drives, the 7600 is probably one of the best of the pre-G3 PowerMacs. If you need more drive space but not more PCI slots, the 8600 is probably the best but is generally a lot more expensive. If you want more drive space and/or more PCI slots, and can't find an affordable 9600, I'd recommend two clones: the Power Computing PowerTowerPro (PTP) or the UMAX SuperMac S900. The PTP is mixed in ease of access to the innards -- at least I haven't figured out an easy way of adding and removing RAM yet! Otherwise, it's an excellent machine and is usually very cheap -- in the U.S., at least! It has six drive bays -- four of them for 5.25" drives -- that can be used with removable media, as well as space for one or (maybe) two 3.5" drives inside! It also has two fans, one of which cools the CPU card. The S900 is very easy to work inside of, but has quirky PCI slots, so that some cards can only work in certain slots. Otherwise, it's a great machine. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but, AFAIK, CPU cards are pretty much interchangeable among these machines, except for the 8600 and 9600 Mach V machines and cards, which must not be used with other cards or machines , except maybe for G3 or G4 upgrade cards. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
