This is why they call it SCSI Voodoo. Per the specifications, what you 
did should make NO difference. SCSI devices are supposed to connect 
anywhere along the chain with no problem (and there's no practial way to 
reach the connection length limit on an internal cable).

My money is that the end connector is slightly flaky, the cable is 
damaged between the two connectors or you got the connector on *just 
right* the last time.

Or the phase of the moon was correct, you stuck your tongue out the left 
side of your mouth this time, and the feathers were from the right kind 
of chicken this time...;-)
