I've heard that defragmentation is not very important on Macs. I've done it
many times without problems, but can't say that it ever fixed a problem
either.
On the other hand, people have been known to lose all data on a disk when
something went wrong with the defragmentation process. So unless you can be
fairly sure that there is some benefit to be derived, why take the chance?
