Did you enable autostart and parity?  Reinitializing it with Drive Setup
(OS Extended).

I had an SCA IBM 36GB on a 7600 before transferring it to my 8500 - it was
capable of 8.4 MB/sec sustained transfers under SCSI Bus "0"

You can use the 2906 card but you won't be able to boot from it.
