I had similar issues with my 800... the following solved issue...

Epson 800 Ink Cartridge Replacement:

A: If this is the first ink cartridge that has ever been installed
into the printer, then the print heads will automatically move
slightly to the left when the printer's power is turned on.
Otherwise, if either of the printer's ink out lights are flashing or
solid, then hold down the appropriate cleaning button (for example,
if the black ink out light is solid or flashing, then hold down the
black cleaning button) until the print heads move to the left. If
neither of the ink out lights are solid or flashing, then hold down
both the black and color cleaning buttons at the same time until the
print heads move to the left, and then, if you are installing a
color ink cartridge, press the color cleaning button one time. If
you are installing a black ink cartridge, no additional buttons need
to be pressed. The print heads will have moved slightly to the left
and the power light will be flashing at this point. Remove the
yellow tape seal from the top of the ink cartridge. Do not remove
the white label from the top of either ink cartridge. The ink in a
cartridge missing the white label will be exposed to air and will
thicken such that print head clogging and possible print head
failure can occur. If the white label has been removed from an ink
cartridge, the cartridge will not function correctly and it will
need to be replaced. More importantly, to avoid potential damage to
the printer, do not install a cartridge from which the white label
has been removed. Insert the ink cartridge into the printer, and
lower the ink cartridge clamp, pushing down on the clamp until it
locks into place. Press the load/eject button to begin charging the
ink delivery system (approximately 7 minutes for initial install;
approximately 4 minutes for replacement). When the printer is done
charging, the Power light will stop flashing. Detailed instructions
and illustrations can be found in the Setup Guide.

Hope this helps.
