<< I need to get old DOS WordPerfect manuscript files off ancient 5 1/4 disks.
Does anybody have an idea how to go about that? >>

Find a friend with a PC that still has the 5 1/4 drive. If you have a friend
with a PC but no 5 1/4 drives, I'm sure you can buy one new or used and have
your friend install the drive in their machine. There are still a lot of PC's
running around with 5 1/4 drives in them. Put up a notice at your local high
school or college bulletin board, near the computer lab, telling them your
situation. Put an ad in the local free ads paper, with your problem. Then,
whoever you find, can transfer from 5 1/4 to 3 1/2. Next up for you, is
finding software to read the files. Basically, most the same suggestions
apply.
